Dylan Skinner
I am a Data Scientist at e-TeleQuote Insurance and a Master's student in Computer Science at Georgia Tech. I hold a bachelor's degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics with a focus on data science and machine learning from Brigham Young University (BYU). My interests include machine learning, deep learning, graphical models, and Bayesian hierarchical models, particularly their applications in sports prediction!
Blog LinkedIn Github MediumData Scientist, e-TeleQuote
I am currently a data scientist at e-TeleQuote Insurance. I work closely with the financial planning and sales teams to help them obtain data-driven insights through data science practices. Some of the models I worked on are bayesian hierarchical models, CatBoost models, gamma-gamma/gamma-poisson models, and—of course—linear and logistic regression models.
June 2024+Mathematics Research Assistant, BYU
I was a research assistant for Dr. Mark Hughes at BYU. In my research, I used deep reinforcement learning (PPO algorithm specifically), and applied it to 4D topology. I presented my research at several conferences, namely the BYU Student Research Conference (2022, 2023, 2024), the JMM Research Conference (2023 in Boston, 2024 in San Francisco), and the University of Utah Undergraduate Research Conference (2022). I was also able to present my research at the Utah MLOps meet-up in June 2024.
If you are interested in my presentation slides, this is the presentation I gave in at the 2023 JMM Conference in Boston, BYU Conference in 2022, and the University of Utah Conference. This is the presentation I gave at the 2024 JMM Conference in San Francisco, and this is the talk I gave the MLOps meet-up!
I have also published an undergraduate honors thesis as part of BYU's honors experience. My research is in 4D topology and deep reinforcement learning. You can check out my thesis here!
May 2021 - April 2024Data Science Intern, Harbor Health
I was a data science intern for Harbor health, focusing on building models to help the health care system run more efficiently! This included time series forecasting to predict medical events for patients, intense data grouping for improvement in previous models, and LLM based data matching. I really enjoyed my time at Harbor Health and the things I was able to learn.
May - August 2023R Programming Teaching Assistant, BYU
I was a teaching assistant for an honors class at BYU that focused on statistical modeling and data visualization in R. I had a great time answering the questions that students had and showing them the power of the tidyverse!
2022Online Math Instructor, Juni Learning
I was an online mathematics instructor for the tutoring company Juni Learning. I instructed students in base level geometric proofs, fractional algebra, and pre-calculus. It was awesome to see a rising generation so interested in math!
